ABOUT Celebrated British social reformer and statistician, who is considered the founder of modern nursing. Later in her life she worked in India studying the effects of sanitation in rural life and helping to improve the country's health services and medical care.

BEFORE FAME She entered nursing after feeling the calling of God and was the superintendent at the Institute for the Care of Sick Gentlewomen in Upper Harley Street, London before the Crimean War started.

TRIVIA She was dubbed "The Lady with the Lamp" during the Crimean War, where she was serving as a nurse, because of her habit of making rounds at night.

FAMILY LIFE Her parents were named Frances Smith and William Edward Nightingale.

ASSOCIATED WITH Jaclyn Smith starred in a film inspired by her.
