Civil Protest at VIO Office Mabushi, Abuja

A protest broke out this afternoon at the VIO office of Mabushi, Abuja, where a Vehicle Inspectorate Officer arrested a tri-cycle operator popularly known as 'keke napep'. It is not clear what the cause of the arrest is, some mobile police men are seen on the scene of the protest trying to restore order to the scene. At this time we cannot clearly assert the offence of the keke napep rider,
but the audacity and solidarity with which the other keke napep riders are making their  demands on the VIO Office Complex gives us reason to believe that the reason for the arrest is howbeit preposterous and flimsy. I for one have been a victim of the bullying of the VIO officers in the Abuja Metropolis, where persons are put under undue pressure, some drivers are even put under hot pursuit to the extent of loss of life and property.
something needs to be done, Government policies should be clear and unambiguous, the powers and duties of these law enforcement agents should be clearly stated and the limits of their powers should also be presented, The Public is still finding it a hard nut to crack, when it comes to making a demarcation between the duties of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) and the Vehicles Inspectorate Office (VIO), for instance who issues driver's license? Who Prosecutes road traffic offences? etc
To this end Government should ensure that these agencies do not overstep their boundaries, Human Rights Organisations should also be on high alert on these issues.
